If you want cheap eats near Incheon Airport, the price you pay at Puzzle Food (퍼즐푸드 한식뷔페) depends on what time your flight lands. It is an all-you-can-eat Korean home-cooking buffet in Haneul City on Yeongjong Island, fifteen minutes and ₩13,200 by taxi from Terminal 1. An adult plate is ₩10,000 in the middle of the day, ₩8,000 if you walk in when it opens at 06:00, and ₩7,000 between 4pm and 7pm on the happy hour discount. At ₩7,000 that is the cheapest full sit-down meal I have priced on this island.

A hansik buffet is not a hotel breakfast spread and it is not Korean barbecue. It is what a Korean household eats on a normal weekday — rice, a soup, one hot main dish, and a long counter of side dishes — laid out on bars so you serve yourself. There is no menu, no ordering, and nothing to pronounce. For a traveller between flights that last part matters more than the food does.

How much does it cost, and why does the time of day change the price?

Before leaving, work backwards from your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines. Allow for the return journey, security and departure immigration, plus any baggage errands and waits for transport or a table. The airport arrival and return guide keeps the shared planning assumptions in one place; the route and menu below describe this particular restaurant.

Puzzle Food runs three different adult prices in a single day. The chalkboard by the door carries the morning and standard rates; a separate banner on the road carries the afternoon discount. Nobody translates either of them, so here they are.

The whole price list is on one board: breakfast ₩8,000, open 06:00 to 19:00, adult ₩10,000, elementary ₩7,000, preschool ₩5,000.

The happy hour is the part worth planning around. Between 4pm and 7pm the adult rate drops thirty per cent to ₩7,000 for the same unlimited food. That is a promotional banner rather than a printed menu price, so treat it as something that can end — but if your inbound lands mid-afternoon, it is a three-hour window that lines up unusually well with a layover.

One thing the price does not decide: whether you need cash. Cards work, foreign ones included, there is no tip and no service charge. If you are wondering whether to change money at all for a stopover, how far you can get on a Korean layover without any won at all answers it properly.

What is actually on the bars?

The hot main dish sits in a cast-iron cauldron in the middle of the room, over its own burner. On the visit these photographs come from it was smoked duck stir-fried with vegetables (오리훈제볶음), which is a dish Korean families usually order in rather than cook at home.

The main dish cooks in the cauldron in the middle of the room and gets topped up through the day.

The rice is not only plain white. One of the cookers held kongnamul-bap (콩나물밥), rice steamed with soybean sprouts through it, which you eat by spooning the seasoned soy sauce over the top and mixing. If you have never had it, take a small bowl of that and a small bowl of white rice and find out which you prefer — that is the whole advantage of a buffet.

The side dish counter is where the meal is decided. Trays of chive pancake, braised aubergine, seasoned dried squid, sweet potato and seaweed-roll fritters, braised burdock root, dressed water dropwort, seasoned nuts and stir-fried fish cake, plus pan-fried handmade tofu with a sharp soy dressing. The side dishes change from day to day, so the counter you see will not be the one in this photograph. What stayed with me is that none of it was over-salted, which is not a given at this price.

Every tray has its own tongs or spoon. Take a little of several things rather than a lot of one.

There is also a bunsik corner, which is the snack-shop food Korean teenagers eat: tteokbokki (떡볶이) in a pot with mini gimbap rolls (꼬마김밥) laid out beside it, plus stir-fried kimchi and warm soft tofu. Dipping the gimbap into the tteokbokki sauce is the intended move. If you are travelling with children who will not touch anything unfamiliar, this corner alone justifies the ₩5,000 preschool rate.

Soft tofu stew (순두부찌개) is ladled from its own pot, so a plate of cold and fried things comes with something hot and soupy without you ordering anything. A finished plate looks like this, and it cost ₩10,000.

Does it fit in a short layover?

A buffet is faster than a restaurant because the waiting is gone. You are not ordering, not waiting for the kitchen, and not asking for the bill in a language you do not read. That takes twenty minutes off a normal sit-down meal, and on a layover twenty minutes is the whole argument.

For a layover under five hours, stay inside the airport. With more time, decide only after clearing arrival formalities and checking the return journey against your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines. If bags need collecting or rechecking, add those errands separately. The arrival and return planning guide helps you decide how much time remains for the meal.

Note the closing time. Puzzle Food shuts at 19:00, earlier than almost anything else worth leaving the airport for. An evening arrival will not make it.

How do you get there from the terminals?

The address is 인천 영종구 운중로 166 1층, on the ground floor, next door to the Daiso in Haneul City (하늘도시). Show the driver the Korean. The taxi fare from Terminal 1 is ₩13,200 for 13.0 km and about fifteen minutes; from Terminal 2 it is ₩17,400 for 18.6 km and about eighteen minutes.

If you would rather not pay for the whole ride, take the AREX train to Yeongjong station (영종역) — eleven minutes and ₩1,300 from Terminal 1, seventeen minutes and ₩1,900 from Terminal 2 — and take a taxi from there. That leg is 3.6 km, about six minutes, ₩6,200. There is a bus route as well (AREX to Yeongjong, then local bus 영종10, thirty-five minutes and ₩2,500 in total) but buses on this island run infrequently and departure times need checking, so check the next one in Naver Map before you commit to it.

For the pin, Puzzle Food on Google Maps puts you in the right car park. For opening hours on the day you actually go, and for directions that a Korean driver will follow, paste 퍼즐푸드 한식뷔페 into Naver Map instead — it is the app the country runs on, and it will tell you if the place is shut for a public holiday.

How does it compare with the other cheap buffets on Yeongjong?

There are three of these within twenty minutes of the airport and they are not interchangeable. The honest split is by what you want out of the meal, not by which is best.

Between the three, the only real reason to choose Puzzle Food over the other two is timing. Land mid-afternoon and it is ₩3,000 cheaper than either. Land at 9am and the three are within ₩100 of each other, at which point pick whichever is closest to where you are standing.

The honest verdict

Go if you have five hours or more, if you land between 4pm and 7pm, and if what you want is a full Korean meal with self-service rather than ordering individual dishes. Eating alone is completely normal in Korea, and this is a neighbourhood canteen rather than a place built for groups.

Do not go if you want a specific dish. A buffet gives you range, not a signature. If you have come to Korea for one perfect bowl of something, the guide to whether leaving Incheon Airport is worth it at all, and where to go if it is has restaurants that will do that better. And do not go after dinner time — the doors close at 19:00 and a late arrival has other options.

Common questions

Is there an English menu at Puzzle Food?

There is nothing to order from, in any language, which is the point. You pay one price at the counter and serve yourself from the bars. Nothing has to be pronounced or pointed at.

What time does the ₩7,000 happy hour run?

From 4pm to 7pm, thirty per cent off the ₩10,000 adult rate. It was advertised on a banner at the roadside rather than on the permanent price board, so confirm it on the day if the discount is the reason you are going.

Can I get a vegetarian meal here?

Partly. Rice, the fritters, the pancakes, the braised vegetables and the pan-fried tofu are all self-served, so you can build a plate without meat. Korean side dishes are frequently seasoned with fish sauce or anchovy stock, so this works for flexible vegetarians rather than strict ones.

Is it open early enough for a 6am landing?

It opens at 06:00 and the breakfast rate is ₩8,000. Whether you can get there that early is a separate question — the first AREX train, not the restaurant, is the constraint on a pre-dawn arrival.

Can I bring a suitcase?

It is a wide room with its own car park rather than a cramped shopfront, so a cabin bag is not a problem. With a full-size case you are better off leaving it at the airport — what luggage storage at Incheon actually costs and which desk you need covers the options and the prices.

Do I need to book?

No. You walk in, pay, and sit down. It is a neighbourhood buffet rather than a destination restaurant.

Updated 17 September 2026: layover advice revised to distinguish planning scenarios from a guaranteed return time. This guide recommends staying inside the airport on connections under five hours.
