Do You Need Cash in Korea on a Layover? Mostly No, With One Exception

For a short Korea layover, use cards for meals and shopping, but plan separately for transport top-ups. Compare cash needs without assuming every machine is alike.

The short answer: restaurants and ordinary shopping on a short Yeongjong outing can usually be paid for by card. Carry won if you plan to use a cash-loading transport-card service. Do not assume that a shop accepting your bank card for food also accepts it for transit top-ups.

What do you actually spend money on during a layover on Yeongjong?

A short layover outside the terminal is a small number of transactions: a train or a taxi out, a meal, maybe a locker for your bag, maybe a coffee, then the same trip back. Here is what each one takes.

PaymentWhat to plan
Restaurant or ordinary convenience-store purchaseCard payment is the normal option at the places covered here
Physical T-money cash top-upHave Korean won ready for the ordinary cash-loading method
Single-journey rail ticketCheck the payment methods displayed on the machine; keep the refundable ticket
Baggage storageConfirm payment and the tariff with the named operator
Payment methods can differ between a retail purchase, a ticket machine and a top-up service.

When should you carry cash for T-money?

Use the cash-loading method described in the T-money guide. Loading rules can differ between physical cards and app-based products.

Budget for the physical card separately from the travel balance. Choose the amount from the journeys you plan rather than treating a suggested round sum as a requirement.

The phrase to show a convenience store cashier, if you go that route, is 티머니 충전해 주세요 (“please top up my T-money”). Hand over the card and the cash together.

Can you skip the T-money card entirely?

For a train-only return to Unseo, a single-journey ticket is an alternative to buying a reusable card. Compare the two ticket choices; neither replaces checking your return deadline.

A single-journey rail ticket carries a refundable ₩500 deposit. Keep the ticket for the refund machine after the trip. Check accepted payment methods at the ticket machine rather than assuming every foreign card will work.

Where are the ATMs and exchange counters at Incheon Airport?

For Terminal 1, use the airport’s current facility directory to select a public-area bank, exchange counter or ATM. Check opening hours for your arrival time and withdrawal support with your card issuer.

For Terminal 2, search the airport’s facility directory with the T2 filter and confirm whether the bank or ATM is in the public area you can reach. An airside service is not interchangeable with an arrivals-hall counter.

For a foreign card, check withdrawal support and PIN requirements with your card issuer. Do not shorten or alter your PIN based on a travel blog, and do not assume every Korean ATM has the same limit.

How do you pay for a taxi from the terminal?

Card payment is common for taxis used on these outings. Confirm the destination and payment method before departure; the overnight guide separates daytime route estimates from night surcharges.

Two things from the airport’s official taxi guide that matter more than the payment question. The base fare for a standard taxi is ₩4,800, and at Terminal 1 the Incheon-bound taxis — which is what you want for anywhere on Yeongjong — queue at stand 5D, not at the Seoul stands. And a night surcharge of roughly 20% to 40% applies between 22:00 and 04:00, which is worth folding into your arithmetic if your layover runs through the small hours. Fares seen in September 2026.

Do restaurants on Yeongjong take cards?

Cards are accepted at the restaurants covered by the site. That is useful for a short meal outing, but it is not a guarantee that every transaction or card network will work without an issue.

There is no customary tip to add to these restaurant meals. Ordinary convenience-store purchases and transport-card loading are different transactions; the snack guide is about the former.

Storage has its own operator and tariff. The baggage storage guide lists verified counters; confirm payment when you confirm the collection time.

Should you change money before you land?

Choose based on the services you will use. You do not need to exchange a week’s spending money merely to buy a meal, but leave a way to pay for the transport you have chosen.

Check the airport’s bank and exchange listings for your terminal and arrival time. A quoted location or opening hour should not replace checking which area you can access.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my foreign credit card to buy a subway ticket at Incheon Airport?

Check the methods displayed by the ticket machine and have an alternative. A statement that a machine accepts cards does not establish compatibility with every foreign issuer.

How much Korean cash should I bring for a layover?

There is no universal amount. If using a physical transport card, allow for its purchase price and the rides you intend to load; storage and optional shopping are separate.

Are there 24-hour ATMs at Incheon Airport?

The airport lists 24-hour ATMs, but use the current facility directory to select your terminal and accessible area. Opening hours do not establish that a machine supports your particular card.

Do I need cash to eat at a small restaurant near Incheon Airport?

No. Cards work at the restaurants covered on this site, including small family-run ones. Side dishes, water and refills are free, there is no tipping, and no service charge is added, so what you pay is the menu price.

Does a convenience store accepting cards mean it accepts card-funded top-ups?

No. A retail purchase and a transport top-up are different services. For the ordinary physical T-money cash-loading method, have won ready; check any alternative product’s own instructions.

The short version

Pick your transport first, then arrange the payment it needs. The six-hour meal plan keeps the outing simple; there is no need to add purchases or detours just to use up a balance.
