Gopchang Near Incheon Airport: They Grill It For You

Grilled beef intestine is the hardest thing on a Korean menu to try alone. At this Yeongjong place the staff sear it for you — but they don't open until 4pm.

The meal here was provided by the restaurant. No money changed hands, nobody read this before it went up, and the prices below are the ones on the board.

Gopchang is beef intestine, grilled over fire at your table. It is probably the most intimidating thing on a Korean menu if you have never had it, and the usual advice — go with a Korean friend who knows what they are doing — is not much help when you are passing through on a layover.

At 벽돌곱창 in Jungsan-dong, a server sets the plate up, does the first sear, and keeps moving the pieces around the griddle until they are ready. You do not have to touch the tongs. That removes the part most people are actually worried about, which is ruining expensive meat in front of a room full of strangers.

The catch is the clock, not the food. They do not open until 4pm. If you land in the morning, this one is no use to you. If you land in the evening it is 19 minutes from Terminal 1 by taxi, and they serve until 1am — which makes it one of the few proper dinners on the island for a late arrival.

For a layover under five hours, stay inside the airport. With more time, decide only after clearing arrival formalities and checking the return journey against your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines.

Does it fit in your layover?

Before leaving, work backwards from your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines. Allow for the return journey, security and departure immigration, plus any baggage errands and waits for transport or a table. The airport arrival and return guide keeps the shared planning assumptions in one place; the route and menu below describe this particular restaurant.

What you are actually ordering

There is a printed card on the table with a diagram of a cow on it. 곱창 is the small intestine. 대창 is the large intestine, and it is much fattier — the card says so plainly. They also sell 막창, 특양 and 염통, and the card tells you which sauce suits which cut. It is the sort of thing that normally requires a local friend, printed and left on the table.

The assortment arrives raw, arranged around the griddle with chives and enoki in the middle. Those dark red slices are liver.

The 와규곱창모둠 comes laid around the rim of a round griddle set into the table, with chopped chives, enoki mushrooms and slices of liver piled in the centre. The 대창 is pink and visibly full of fat. Potatoes cook on the plate alongside everything else and soak up the rendered fat — crisp outside, floury inside, and good enough on their own.

Once it is cooked, the 곱창 is chewy on the outside and the soft filling inside bursts when you bite it. There was no barnyard smell. The 대창 releases a lot of fat in one mouthful, which is why the two cuts get different sauces: a garlic-and-sesame-oil dip for the 곱창, and the spicy 양념장 loaded with 청양고추 for the 대창.

What comes free, and what surprises people

A 순두부찌개 — red, bubbling, in its own earthenware pot — arrives free with the first order, so there is something to eat while the grill gets going. The banchan are bean sprouts dressed in soy and a sharp, freshly mixed 열무겉절이. Two sauces come with them: the spicy one with plenty of chilli, and minced garlic in sesame oil.

A plate of 육회 — raw beef, sliced clean rather than drenched in sesame oil — also came out alongside. Between that and the liver on the griddle, there is more raw beef on this table than most visitors expect. The staff handle the grilling, so the simplest approach is to eat what they put in front of you in the order they cook it.

Finished gopchang with a piece of the kimchi geotjeori on top, which cuts the fat.

Piling the bean sprouts or the 겉절이 on top of a finished piece cuts the richness considerably. This is worth knowing about halfway through, when the fat starts to add up. For the wider question of how to get through a Korean menu without the language, ordering in a Korean restaurant without speaking Korean goes through the practical mechanics.

Getting there

Paste this into Naver Map — Google Maps does not have this restaurant, and searching the name there returns a different shop in mainland Incheon.

By bus, the 202 leaves from stop 13B on the first floor of Terminal 1 and runs to 신명스카이뷰정문 in 38 minutes for ₩1,500, with no transfer. Add the walk at each end and it is about 45 minutes door to door. It is not frequent, so check the next departure in Naver Map before you commit to it — on a layover, a missed bus costs more than the taxi fare you saved. A T-money card pays the fare and saves you counting coins.

Leave your suitcase at the airport rather than bringing it. This is a table with a fire pit in the middle of it and no obvious place for luggage; the luggage storage desks at both terminals are the better option.

The two things that will trip you up

They open at 4pm. Every day, 4pm to 1am, seven days a week according to the Naver listing. There is no lunch service and no break time to work around, because the whole operation is an evening one. If your layover is a daytime one, the kongnamul gukbap place a few minutes away in the same district opens at 6am instead.

The assortment is a two-serving minimum. Solo diners are normal in Korea and nobody will look at you strangely, but the 모둠 cannot be ordered for one. If you are travelling alone, you are looking at the single cuts rather than the mixed plate. Coming with one other person is what this place is built around — the round griddle tables seat groups, and it works as a small party as much as a dinner.

Who this is for

This is a dinner option for two or more people who enjoy offal and have enough time after arrival formalities. On my visit, staff handled the first sear and explained the cuts. That help is the reason I would consider it for someone trying gopchang for the first time.

Skip it if you land in the morning, if you are alone and wanted the assortment, or if offal is simply not something you eat. In that last case Korean barbecue near the airport gives you the same table-grill experience with pork and beef instead. And if your layover runs through the night, the overnight layover guide covers what stays open after this place closes at 1am.

Questions people ask

What is gopchang, exactly?

Beef small intestine, cleaned and grilled. The soft filling inside is the point of it — that is what bursts when you bite through. 대창, the large intestine, is the fattier cut, and the card on the table sets out the difference.

Do I have to grill it myself?

No. A server sets the plate, sears everything first, and keeps rearranging the pieces as they cook. This is the main reason to come here rather than somewhere that hands you tongs and leaves you to it.

Can I eat here on my own?

You can sit down and eat alone without anyone blinking, but the 모둠 assortment starts at two servings. Solo, you order individual cuts instead.

How late do they serve?

Until 1am, every day, opening at 4pm. That is unusually late for the island and makes it one of the few sit-down dinners available if your flight gets in at nine or ten at night.

Is there anything on the menu that is not offal?

The free 순두부찌개 and the banchan are not, and a plate of 육회 came with the meal, but the menu is built around grilled offal. If that is the problem rather than the appeal, this is the wrong restaurant for you.

Is there parking and wi-fi?

Both, according to the Naver listing, along with high chairs and group seating. Reservations are accepted, which is worth considering if you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday evening with a flight to catch.

Updated 17 September 2026: layover advice revised to distinguish planning scenarios from a guaranteed return time. This guide recommends staying inside the airport on connections under five hours.
