The short answer
Incheon Airport has coin lockers in both terminals, open 24 hours, starting around ₩2,000–3,000. It also has staffed storage counters that take anything, cost roughly ₩4,000–10,000, and give you a receipt and insurance. Both are easy. Neither is the interesting part.
The interesting part is that almost every layover guide treats luggage as a solved problem, and it is the single thing most likely to eat your transit window. Storing a bag costs you time twice — once to drop it, once to collect it — and on a bad day it is the difference between eating a proper meal and standing in a queue watching the clock.
First: do you actually have a bag?
Before anything else, answer this. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, they never come out at Incheon. You walk off the plane with a backpack and nothing else, and the entire question disappears.
Confirm this at the airport where you check in, not here. Ask the agent directly: “Is this tagged through to my final destination, or do I collect it in Seoul?” On a single ticket with one airline, it is almost always through-checked. On two separate tickets, it is almost never. Self-transfer bookings from budget booking sites are the ones that catch people.
If your bag is through-checked, skip the rest of this and go read the time math on leaving the airport. You are in the easy version of this problem.
Coin lockers
These are the default, and for a layover they are usually the right call.
- Available 24 hours in both terminals
- Roughly ₩2,000–3,000 and up, depending on locker size
- Cash or card at the machine
- No queue, no paperwork, no counter staff to find
The limit that catches people: large suitcases do not fit. Anything 28 inches and up is not going in a locker. If you are travelling with a full-size checked case, the locker banks are not an option and you need a staffed counter.
Locker banks are spread through both terminals rather than concentrated in one place. In Terminal 1 the main ones sit near entrance 5 on both the first and third floors; in Terminal 2, near entrance 3 on the first floor and entrance 4 on the third. Follow the signs rather than my directions — airports move things.
Staffed storage counters
If the locker will not take it, this is your answer.
- Roughly ₩4,000–10,000, depending on size
- CCTV and insurance on the bag
- Takes oversized cases, sports equipment, awkward shapes
- The Terminal 1 third-floor counter runs 24 hours. The others generally open around 05:00 and close somewhere between 21:00 and 23:00
Those closing times matter more than the price. If your onward flight leaves at 01:30 and you dropped your bag at a counter that shuts at 21:00, you have created a problem for yourself that no amount of running will fix. Check the closing time on the sign before you hand anything over, and check it against your departure, not against when you plan to be back.
There are also prepaid services sold through travel sites at a flat rate, usually around ₩7,000 per bag per day regardless of size. They are fine, and worth it if you have one enormous case, but you are mostly paying for the convenience of booking in English before you land. The airport counters are not hard to use.
The pricing trap
Most of this is priced by the day, not by the hour.
Three hours costs the same as fourteen. This cuts both ways. It means a quick lunch run is worse value than it looks, and it means an overnight layover is much better value than you would expect. If you are already paying for a day, you may as well use the day.
It also means the calculation is not really about money. ₩5,000 is not a decision. The decision is time.
What storing a bag actually costs you in time

An hour and a quarter. On a five-hour layover, that is most of your margin gone before you have left the building — and it stacks on top of an immigration queue that has run past 90 minutes at peak. That is why the answer to “can I leave the airport?” is a different answer for a backpacker than it is for someone with two checked cases.
Store it in the terminal you depart from
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings. You cannot walk between them. The free shuttle takes about twenty minutes, and that is twenty minutes each way plus waiting.
So if you land at Terminal 1 and fly out of Terminal 2, do not leave your bag where you landed. Take it with you, or move to your departure terminal first and store it there. People get this wrong because it feels like one airport. It is not.
Keep these with you
Obvious, but people are tired when they land:
- Passport and boarding pass — you need both to get back in
- Any medication you take on a schedule
- Phone charger or power bank, because you will be navigating on your phone all day
- A layer. Yeongjong is coastal and the wind off the water is colder than the forecast suggests, especially between November and March
And keep your locker number or receipt somewhere that is not a photo you will scroll past. Write it down.
The honest verdict
Hand luggage only: take it with you. It is one small bag, the restaurants around Unseo are not cramped, and you save yourself two trips to a locker bank. Storage is a solution to a problem you do not have.
One roller case: use a coin locker if it fits. Ten minutes total, and you are not dragging wheels over pavement for a mile.
Full-size checked bags, and you had to collect them: think seriously about staying inside the airport. Between baggage claim, the immigration queue, and two storage trips, a five-hour layover has already gone. Six hours or more and it works. Less than that and you are buying stress.
The thing to hold onto: luggage is not a cost problem at Incheon, it is a time problem. ₩5,000 will not hurt you. Seventy-five minutes might.
